Mummy's Mask

Session 1
The Lottery

The Lottery

The party gathered in the city of Wati for various reasons related to the opening of the famed Necropolis. The Silver Snakes were registered with the Church of Pharasma as an official team of Osirionoligists and Tomb Explorers. The lottery was performed by the high priestess of the Pharasmins, Sebti the Crocodile, and the Silver Snakes drew the Tomb of Akhentepi as their first expedition.

The Rules

The priests of the Grand Mausoleum expect groups exploring sites within the necropolis to follow three basic rules, as mentioned by High Priestess Sebti the Crocodile in her speech during the opening ceremony.

Remember How This Came to Pass: The Plague of Madness was unleashed upon the city of Wati while religious authorities were engaged in infighting. This rule is a reminder that the necropolis remains a holy place, and those who engage in needless conflict and banditry are not only criminals, but accursed.

Every Slave’s Hut Is a Memorial: Every structure within the necropolis is a testament to the people who lived and died in the city. Explorers must not desecrate or vandalize standing structures and tombs, but preserve them as the memorials they were intended to be. Some structures may be trapped or decrepit, but willful and unnecessary destruction will not be tolerated.

Honor the Departed: The dead should be treated with dignity and respect. If the interred need to be disturbed to recover an antiquity or relic, they should be returned to their resting places carefully. It is understood that the ancient dead are often brittle, but there is no need for the contents of a sarcophagus to be summarily dumped on the ground. This rule does not apply to the undead or other abominations.

Failure to comply with these rules can result in, but is not limited to, expulsion from the necropolis, a ban on continued exploration, seizure of recovered valuables, and arrest and prosecution by local authorities .

The Commotion

Aisha lingered after the lottery to eavesdrop on some commotion caused by Velriana Hypaxes of the Order of the Scorched Hand. Her organization was quite irate at the randomness of the lottery system, seemingly intent on exploring a specific site holy to Nethys.

The First Expedition

Reaching the Tomb of Akhentepi, the party found the seal to have been once cracked by a crowbar. They heaved the heavy doors open, and rolled a stone door out of the way, to be met with a long climb down into the tomb. Raziya lost her grip of the rope, and fell a full 50 feet, landing unconscious at the tomb entrance. As the party hastened to her and applied some healing, they found a nearby corpse that had shared the same fate.

Pressing onward, the adjacent hall was trap-laden, and many party members were ventilated with sharp darts. Proceeding southward, they ran afoul a cursed mirror which branded some of them with marks reading “Theif” in ancient Osiriani. They slew a pair of wicked Solifugids, and had a hard battle against an elemental Sandling.

Their luck would not improve, as they entered a large ceremonial room with a sarcophagus. Approaching the relic triggered a foul trap which sealed them within the room, as electricity arced wildly from the dais, and the sarcophagus rose up as an animated object intent on punishing these grave-robbers. To make matters worse, a faux exit on the far side opened to reveal a cascade of water from the nearby river!

The Tomb of Akhentepi

It’s a trap!
Gratch and Xenira moved to try to stem the influx of water, while the rest of the party did battle with the animated sarcophagus. One by one they fell to the crushing blows of the animate stone horror, as the water rose to a height of 2 feet… and then slowly stopped rising. It would seem the level of the river had changed since the creation of this tomb. All hope seemed lost, as the party members fell one by one to the monster, until finally Resnick landed the killing blow.

As the dust settled, and the waters drained, Aisha, Gratch, and Umie lay broken, and drowned. The rest unconscious, apart from Resnick. It was a bittersweet victory over the deathtrap – and with no treasure to show for it. The remnants of the group bandaged themselves up, and dragged themselves back to town to recuperate, recruit new allies, and get their new tomb assignment.

While in town recruiting new allies, they meet some rival teams while at the Tooth & Hookah: The Dog Soldiers, the Daughters of the Desert, the Sand Scorpions, The Cryptfinders, and the Order of the Scorched Hand. They discover that each group has had successes, and losses – much like their own. Each team is gritting their teeth and preparing for their second expedition. Velriana Hypaxes was asking around, inquiring about something called “The Erudite Eye,” but nobody seemed to have any information for her.

The following day they received their second lottery. They would be venturing into the House of Pentheru next. Hopefully their fortunes would fare better this time.

Welcome to the Haunted Pentheru Estate

The Silver Snakes filled their missing ranks, and proceeded to their second tomb – The House of Pentheru. This aged mansion was sacked and the family killed during the plague of madness that nearly wiped The City of Wati off the map.

They were immediately met by a haunt – the dead angry spirits yet linger in this old home. They were able to placate the gate spirit, and explored the east yard partially. There, they found a hideous hell-borne dog with two heads. Their bard Tindi Jinxfizzle became frightened, and fled into the house. Seeking her out, the party found a still-functioning magical spa. It would have been more relaxing, were it not for the headless corpse in the adjacent privy.

Venturing onward, they came across another haunt and some skeletons in the Foyer. With some difficulty, they were able to beat down the risen dead, and placate the angry spirits. They seemed to be poorly equipped to deal with hell-dogs and skeletons – their steel blades would prove even less effective against their next enemy, the Sandman living in the estate courtyard. His magics put half the part to sleep, before he began to playfully slam into the nearest targets. Fortunately, the very territorial creature had no interest in chasing them, as they fled.

Not to be deterred – the Silver Snakes ventured into the upper level of the estate, drawing the attention of a pair of Vargoiulles, and a Doru Div named Imanish. He traded Nava the key to the family catacombs, in exchange for two of her allies as slaves. The deal was immediately broken, and a fight broke out between the flying head monsters, and the Silver Snakes. They fled the house, their weapons having little effect on the supernatural creatures.

Many of their party had suffered the curse of the Vargouille’s kiss, and were already losing some of their hair. They traded all of their collected wealth with Sebti the Crocodile in exchange for her Divine magics to heal their diseased allies. They also purchased a variety of cold iron weaponry, and bludgeoning weapons. They resolved to be more prepared for the dead and the supernatural when next they entered the haunted estate. At least nobody had died in this old tomb… yet…

Into the Depths of House Pentheru

After recuperating in town, and cleansing the supernatural diseases that plagued them, the Silver Snakes returned to the House of Pentheru, intent on getting revenge on the Doru Div “Imanish.” They were able to kill his Vargouille pets, but the Div managed to escape before a mortal blow could be struck. Even prepared, this fight was difficult for the party.

Venturing out into the west yard, towards the sealed tomb, the party ran afoul a colossal whiptail centipede. The beast was ferocious, and filled with deadly poison. Several party members were knocked unconscious, before the insectoid monstrosity was defeated. The party tended their wounds, then proceeded into the crypt undeterred.

Within the tomb’s first sepulcher was hidden an Adherer – a strange creature that bears a striking resemblance to a mummy. Due to it’s damage resistance, the creature withstood their assault for several minutes, before succumbing to it’s wounds. Deeper in the tomb they had to contend with wicked traps, and a swarm of undead hairless mewling cats – but it was all worth it, as the party came upon their first big haul.

Within the Tomb of Pentheru, they discovered a Mummified Guardian, and piles of semi-precious stones, ornate funerary garb, and golden jewelry – altogether worth several hundred gold coins.

They returned to town, traded their haul for coin, and received their next assignment. Their newest expedition site was none other than the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye, the location a rival group had been intent on exploring themselves.
